A client in Aurora contacted us about a chocolate-brown Coach handbag with a pale spot on the front panel. A drop of hand sanitizer had landed on the leather, damaging the factory finish and leaving a visible loss of color. The rest of the bag was in good condition, so a spot repair made more sense than refinishing the entire piece.
On a dark leather bag, even a small damaged area can stand out. The repair had to stay within the affected section without disturbing the original finish around it. Matching the shade alone wasn’t enough: the restored area also needed to match the leather’s sheen so it wouldn’t look like a patch against the surrounding surface.
The damaged area was prepared and recolored in thin layers, with the edges blended into the original finish. A protective topcoat helped restore the surface sheen. The pale spot is no longer prominent, and the repaired area blends naturally with the rest of the bag.
I was so upset when hand sanitizer left a light spot on my Coach bag. I thought I might have to live with it or buy a new one. The repair turned out great, and you can barely tell where the damage was. I’m really happy I was able to keep using my bag.— Charlotte Harstad
